Seven arrested at Hayes bakery
30 June 2010
Submitted by: UK Border Agency
Seven people have been arrested following a UK Border Agency raid on a bakery in Hayes.
Acting on intelligence, officers visited Dalton Bakeries Ltd on Beaconsfield Road, Hayes on Thursday 10 June, and questioning staff to ensure they had the right to work in the UK.
Of the eleven employees who were on site at the time of the visit, seven (six Indian men and one Sri Lankan man) were arrested for a variety of immigration offences. Five were working in breach of their student visa conditions.
Three remain in detention pending their removal from the UK, while the other four have been granted immigration bail while the UK Border Agency works to get travel documents to remove them.
Dalton Bakeries Ltd have been issued with a warning that they could now be fined up to £70,000 for employing the men, unless bosses can prove they carried out the correct right-to-work checks on their employees.
Inspector Dick Stratton from the UK Border Agency's Harrow and Hillingdon local immigration team, said:
'We are committed to striking at the heart of illegal immigration and tackling those who break the rules.
'In cases where employers are found to be employing illegal workers, we often find they are also undercutting the minimum wage and by-passing health and safety laws.
'We are happy to work with businesses to ensure the right pre-employment checks are carried out, but those intent on operating outside the law should be warned that they will be found and they will be punished.'
Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit the employers section or they can call the UK Border Agency's Employers Helpline on 0300 123 4699.
Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be assured.
